  • The IRC Program students teamed up with Mekeda Dread, founder of Give A Hug Foundation and The World Beat Center in (www.worldbeatcenter.org) to produce a fundraising concert   in San Diego. She is kind enough to teach the students the finer arts of event planning and stage production.   The students learned some great skills while working to create the scholarships for the students most in need at the camp.  The concert was held in May.  The funds went towards a scholarship fund for students of their sister school at the Buduburum Refugee Camp in Accra, Ghana.  The concert also served to inform the public about MDG 2!

  • The Riverside School of Vermont worke with a local AIDS Service Organization called Vermont Cares. They were trained to work with kids who are infected and affected by HIV so that they could become friends with them and give them the support they need, a friend to talk to. For their major OWYP project they organized a very successful walk for HIV/AIDS along the road near their school. They made and sold t-shirts and had a bake sale at the end. The donations from people and businesses to sponsor walkers raised enough money to send 5 of these kids to a summer camp that supports them. UN Millennium Development Goal 6

  • The students of the OWYP group at Jeanne D'Arc in Rabat, Morocco worked in conjunction with the "Lutins des sables" Association to provide nursing bottles to a local orphanage.  They also organized a student conference about MDG 5.  They raised enough money to buy over 100 nursing bottles and other necessities to donate to the orphanage.  Millennium Development Goal 5

  • The students of Caistor Central Public School in Ontario, Canada started a button campaign to raise awareness and money to improve maternal health.

The students raised over to $1100 in their first days of sales for Community Care and Stephen Lewis Foundation!

  • RESPECT Intellectual Club of the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Accra, Ghana held a United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit and Awards Night on the 24th August, 2006. The event coincided with the 150th Flag Day Celebration of Liberia which was also celebrated by organizations, churches, institutions and students.   RIC UN MDGs summit marked the first of its kind to be held on the Buduburam Refugee Camp since the Millennium Campaign was officially lauched six years ago. The theme of this year UN MDGs summit was: Youth and The Millennium Development Goals: Challenges and Opportunities for Development. The guest speaker of the summit was Mr. Aaron Nii Lamte Lawson, Volunteer and Youth Development Worker for RESPECT Ghana who is also serving as a course coordinator for RESPECT University.Mr. Lawson spoke to a population of young leaders and students, some of whom have never heard about the MDGs before. It was very interesting to have in our midst that night members of the camp management who stated that they also enjoy the program and appreciate to see youth speak on the goals and also take actions to make sure that by 2015 these gaols can be achieved. The guest speaker also emphasized in his presentation that in order for these gaols to be achieved, youth must take the lead and the matters should not be left in the hands of governments alone. He said and I quote: " We all have equal responsibilities to make sure that the vision which we all have, come to to reality and the only way this can be possible is for us to take the stand and act now"                                                                                                                                  UN Millennium Development Goals 1-8

  • Youth from the Leadership Center at James River High School and Jenkins Macedo , Programs Coordinator, RESPECT Ghana, discussed ways to promote gender equality and empower the women who reside in the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Accra, Ghana.

It was decided that the JRHS students would conduct a clothing and toy drive for the benefit of both the women and children who reside in the camp. It will be the decision of the women how the donated items will be used. According to Jenkins, the most significant meaning to the lives of the refugee women and children is for the items to be sold. The money from the sale will be used to purchase sewing machines to train the women and give them meaningful employment.

In this small way the students at James River hope that we are able to make a difference in the lives of the Liberian women who are living in Ghana.

Most of these women are undocumented and don't qualify for government programs that provide assistance. The Perinatal Council will distribute the items to the mothers. The students of Northern Light have been bringing in donations and Ronella has been raising funds so that we can purchase some additional items. Yvonne told her doctor about our project and he donated dozens of containers of formula. Jelani called around to stores in our area to inquire about donations. Albertsons made all of their charitable donations for the year, but they offered us a huge discount on discontinued baby items. We went to pick them last week. The science room is now overflowing with baby stuff!"
