Haiti
Who: Lekol Kominite Matenwa
Where: Matenwa, island of LaGonave, Haiti
The small community of Matenwa is nestled in the mountains of Haiti on the island of LaGonave.
This unique community is home to the Lekol Kominite Matenwa, a progressive community school, started 8 years ago.

This school has become a solid community center where people can meet, discuss community problems, and learn to read and write.
Also in Matenwa is the Starfish Vocational School, now in its 3rd year. The Starfish school holds classes in jewelry-making, traditional Haitian sequin and beadwork, painting, drawing, guitar, keyboard, and drums. In addition, the students have begun to plant gardens, grow food, plant trees to promote re-forestation, and establish a small fish farm for raising editable fish. These efforts are all carried out in an attempt to support their families, better their lives, and progress toward a more sustainable future. Both schools have received support from Rotary International.

Matenwa is a very remote region, with no running water and little electricity. However, students do have access to one computer and therefore communication will be internet based. Materials will also be sent down with teachers from the Untied States, who travel to Matenwa several times each year. Participants in the project will range from 8 to 18 years old.
