The One World Africa Youth Summit (OWAYS) is an opportunity for One World Youth Project participants to meet each other face to face, discuss the project, work together on youth leadership skills, and take action on the UN Millennium Development Goals. OWAYS will bring together youth participants from throughout Africa to be decision makers and affect tangible, local change. This year the theme of the summit is: Building Active 21st Century Citizenship, Meeting Unique Challenges with Innovative Solutions. The summit is a blend of workshops, open dialogue, and direct action. We emphasize learning through interaction and participation. In other words, youth participants are asked to speak out and share their ideas during every part of the summit.
Every participant plays an important role in the 6 day conference. Youth participants can see the summit as a journey to discover their leadership skills, put these skills into practice with the support of their peers, and consequently help to affect positive change.
During the One World Africa Youth Summit, youth will spend 6 intense and exciting days exploring local challenges in the community of the host group, discussing solutions, participating in a prioritization process, and ultimately deciding as a group how to allocate funding to solve one or more of the identified challenges. Youth will present on their experiences and decisions at a formal press conference and reception. OWAYS will empower participants with necessary 21st century skills, inspire youth to take leadership and action, and leave a lasting positive impact on the local host community.
“The One World Africa Youth Summit 2007 seeks to provide Africa as well as the whole global community the long-awaited opportunity to marshal youth force, intellectual and institutional support for the promoting of the youth development agenda and … achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals through REAL Action projects'' -Organizing committee vice-chair, Fred Ayifli
