Student Work

Arusha, Tanzania & Orleans, Massachusetts

Focus:

UN Millennium Development Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases

UN Millennium Development Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education

UN Millennium Development Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Dr. Herman Wrice Community Center of Tanzania and the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School of Massachusetts are working together to help achieve UN Millennium Development Goals 2,6, and 7.

The Dr. Herman Wrice Community Center plans to plant trees around Majengo and care for them to help achieve UN Goal 7.  They also have pledged to clean the street around the Center every Saturday. Their first street cleaning took place on March 26th 2005! Some Community Center members have also promised to participate in "Save the Environment for our Future", a project that teacher, Felix Nyakatale, plans to begin soon.  The project will deal with collecting in-house wastes and garbage and educating the local community about the importance of keeping the environment clean.

To help achieve UN Goal 6 students will visit the remote areas to teach malaria prevention tactics (ie: they will show how to avoid mosquitoes and how to destroy their sources).  Youth also plan to arrange local discussions and training on HIV/AIDS.

The Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School will be collecting educational materials and pamphlets on malaria and HIV/AIDS prevention to send to the Dr. Herman Wrice Community Center for their local discussions and visits.

In an effort to help achieve UN Goal 2, the Charter School students also raised $1000.00 by selling artwork created by the Community Center students.  These funds all went to purchase an internet connection for the Community Center in Tanzania.  The Center and students now have regular internet access and have been able to communicate with their sister-school more frequently!

To help achieve UN Goal 7, the Cape Cod Ligthouse Charter School organized a beach clean-up.  They collected and sorted piles of garbage and submitted the results to a national organization studying ocean and estuary pollution.
