The majority of today’s children are born in a world where the HIV/AIDS epidemic is part of their daily life. Our code of conduct at OWYP is to always believe that even a simple action can have a great impact. This is why we are organizing
AIDS AWARNESS DAY
May 24, 2006
involving all the One World Youth Project sites
“1 Day, 14 Countries, 1 Dream, 1 Action”
This day will be focused on 3 issues:
- Children and AIDS : focus on the fact that children also suffer from AIDS
- How fighting against AIDS can help development (that is to say how achieving MDG6 can help to achieve all the others)
- How to raise awareness of this issue among young people all over the world
EXPRESSION
Youth of each group will make a symbol of the fight against AIDS with red ribbons.
On May 24th, they will be asked to:
- Wear the red ribbon and convince their, friends, family and relatives to wear it explaining to them that just by wearing this small ribbon they are raising awareness.
- Take a photo of themselves (portrait photos) wearing the red ribbon and send them to One World Youth Project. We will in return make a display with all the images. It will be a way to show the world that young people are concerned and involved and that the AIDS issue is a universal concern.
ACTION
During this day, each group is asked to work on a small project related to the issues of this day.
For instance: Interviewing a person fighting against AIDS in their community- A presentation on this subject- Drawing and painting- A small awareness campaign in their school, club, group, etc. These are only suggestions, each group can find a project relevant.
REFLECTION
A new section on the Forum has been created to facilitate student dialogue on this important issue.
Students may also submit written pieces on one (or both) of the following subject:
- A letter to a child who suffers from AIDS
or
- an essay addressing what action you would take to eradicate AIDS if you were a government leader

How to make the red ribbons
There are some simple ways to make the red AIDS ribbons:
-You can use some cheap red fabrics that you cut into several small strips and fold them with a centre weld as to make the AIDS red symbol. To fix it and wear it you can use a small safety pin. If you don't have time to buy red fabrics you can use an old red piece of clothes.
- You can also cut some paper strips and colour them with red and use them to make the AIDS red symbol (fold them and fix them with glue) and wear them using safety pins or just pins.
Don't forget to wear the red ribbons on the 24th and convince your friends and families to wear them also.
