Collierville, Tennessee, USA (St. George's Roots & Shoots group)

This morning I arrived in Memphis Tennessee! Julene Reed, the head of technology at St. George's, picked me up from the airport and drove me to the school.

St. George's is a small private high school located in Collierville (a suburb of Memphis). They have a chapter of the Jane Goodall Institute's program for youth, Roots & Shoots. The St. George's Roots & Shoots group is paired with a sister-group in Kiko Parish, Uganda.

When I walked into St. George's I was amazed. The school looks like a nice ski-lodge! I'm serious... a fireplace in the student lounge, a carpeted cafeteria the looks like a restaurant, beautiful artwork hanging on the walls. It was just incredible. And, there was more... then I saw the technology that St. George's is able to use... no wonder Julene is so busy! Many of the classrooms have "smart boards" which are interactive computerized chalk boards! All the students are given a lap-top. St. George's even has a video conferencing facility where they have conferenced with researchers in the Amazon before! They also have an olympic size pool and weight rooms. It was just incredible...I kept saying "wow" throughout most of the day.

After school I met with the Roots & Shoots group to talk about One World Youth Project. They are excited to be paired with the group in Uganda! It was a very low-key and relaxing meeting...which was nice because I was very tired.

Tonight Julene, the Roots & Shoots members, and I went out to dinner. At dinner we met up with two of my family friends (I call them my aunts), Dixie & Donna, who I am staying with for the next few days right outside of Memphis. I had not seen them for about five years! So, it was a happy reunion dinner!

Sincerely,
Jessica Rimington
