Yelapa, Mexico - Day 2

This morning I woke up at 6:30am to try to figure out where to take a shower. When I woke up it was still dark and through my mosquito netting I could see fire-flies hovering all around my bed! It was like miniature fireworks.

I climbed down the ladder from the loft where I slept and shined my flashlight in the direction of where I was told there was a shower. After a few minutes of confusion I found the shower nozzle... the nozzle is nestled between some trees and vines!

After eating breakfast at Isabel's and buying a pastry from the "food man" ...a man who walks around every morning and evening to each house selling food he has cooked, Isabel and I set off into town to meet with the principal of La Escuela Secondaria and a few other women interested in education who Isabel is friends with. It was about a 30 minute walk to the school ... we walked through the entire town...passed el supermercado, muchas casas y palapas (palapas are thatched roof houses common throughout Yelapa and this part of Mexico), pollos, caballos, la tienda de dulces, etc. The school has 4 rooms I believe and a beautiful backyard/playground. The side of the school is painted with a detailed and colorful mural with the theme of "Only after the last tree is cut down will they realize that they can't eat the money." We talked to the principal, Pedro for about 3 hours... regarding One World Youth Project as well as other plans for the school/youth community of Yelapa. Pedro only spoke a little English...so Isabel's friend, Peggy, translated back and forth for Pedro and I ... and I also was able to use some Spanish. I find that I can understand Spanish much better than I can speak it.

After our meeting, Isabel, Peggy, Linda, and I walked back through town. It took us from 1:00 to 4:45 to make it back to Isabel's... everyone wanted to stop and talk to Isabel! Isabel is extremely well known throughout Yelapa as I have come to find out... I said to her, "Wow, you know everyone!" and she responded with "yes, I do." I think Yelapa is one of the few places you can actually say that literally. "Ocassionally I'll pass someone I don't know," explained Isabel laughing, "And, I stop and ask them who they are and what they are doing here!"

I had an amazing time today walking around Yelapa with Isabel! We went to many different houses and walked through the graveyard of Yelapa. The telephone pole is placed right in the middle of the graveyard. "We kind of like that...it's like the spirits are getting transmitted straight up into the sky," said Isabel joking.

Tomorrow a boy from the school is giving me a tour of the town so that I can make a video to share with their sister-school!

Adios!
