Westwood Magnet Middle School offers three interdependent program strands:Aerospace, Bio-Investigations and Information Networks. The school has an international studies approach to learning that emphasizes the intellectual and social development of the child.
Galileo Magnet High School is a small urban school offering the IB program as well as concentrations in air and space, advanced communications and networking, and biotechnology. The Roots & Shoots Club at Galileo began in 2002 and has remained active in the school and community since that time. Roots & Shoots students have volunteered at local animal shelters as well as Habitat for Humanity work sites. In the past two years, students have raised over $2,000 for Heifer International, made over sixty caps for children in chemotherapy, raised $600 for animal rescue in the Gulf States in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and hosted a teach-in dealing with the issue of genocide in Rwanda and the Sudan.
Danville is a small city located in southern Virginia near the North Carolina state line. In the past, Danville has been known for tobacco and textiles but in recent years, the economy has begun to change to embrace technology and research. Danville is surrounded by rural areas and is located approximately one hour from several larger communities including Greensboro, NC and Lynchburg, VA.
