One World Youth Project
Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
“Goal 1 focuses on two things: whether people have enough money to meet their basic needs, and whether they have enough food to meet their daily energy requirements. It aims to lift people out of poverty by providing them with the basic things they need to live a decent life: nutritious food to keep them healthy, clothes, clean water, a home, health care, and affordable schooling.”
We can help reach this goal by: promoting human rights, increasing the agricultural productivity of small farmers, reforming land rights so that people own their own land, diversifying the economy, encouraging more small and medium size businesses, and increasing construction of roads, ports, power grids and communications to reduce the cost of doing business.

“Karla, a 17 year-old former street child from Cusco, Peru, has been helping others rise out of the poverty trap. She managed to escape a life on the streets thanks to the education she received from a walk-in centre. Now she is working with other street children to teach them how to make batik T-shirts. This experience has given them a sense of pride and purpose they didn't have before. When government officials saw her project was working, they donated an old Hacienda to the project for them to renovate and use. The renovation was aided by a group of Scottish students who decided to raise funds after learning about Karla's project while back-packing through Peru. The Hacienda now serves as a place for kids to learn agricultural skills, grow their own food and get an education. Thanks to this bold initiative by one highly courageous girl, the project has transformed the lives of over 100 children and will, in the future, help many more.

Students from Miami Country Day School (Florida, USA) are learning about solar energy. They're making solar ovens of their own and, using the proceeds from their annual plant sale to help send large VILLAGER SUN OVENS to help feed people in Haiti, Senegal, and Afghanistan. Each oven can cook over 1,200 meals per day using just the sun for fuel. Using the sun to cook food will allow the space on planes and trucks that were used to transport cooking fuel to be used to send more food, so even more people can be fed. These ovens are extremely well insulated to hold heat in and keep cold out. Even though the winters are very cold in this area of the world, there is still an abundance of sunshine, which is conducive to solar cooking. Other schools are welcome to join the Solar Cookers Campaign.”
