Goal 8: Build a Global Partnership for Development

“Goal 8 recognizes that eradicating poverty worldwide can only be achieved through a global partnership between developed and developing countries. The world has the financial resources to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and end poverty. What's missing is the political will of many world leaders to make this happen. During the recent opening of the General Assembly's 59th session, many world leaders stressed that facing threats to international peace and security would be unsuccessful unless international cooperation to reduce poverty was intensified.”

Can you think of a project you and your peers might be able to design and implement in your community in order to help reach Goal 8?

INSPIRE

Many developed countries agreed several decades ago to work towards contributing 0.7% of their Gross National Income (GNI) each year in aid to help developing countries, and so far 5 European countries have achieved this goal (Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Luxembourg).

Out of the 37 least developed countries that are eligible for a debt relief program, 13 have successfully implemented policy reforms and poverty reduction programs and another 14 have developed a poverty reduction strategy. The average size of the debt in these countries is no longer greater than the income that is generated by their economies.
