The VillaVerdeEcologicalCenter (VillaVerdeSchool), founded in 2001, is the first bilingual school in Gracias, Lempira. The VillaVerdeSchool’s mission is to empower local children with a quality bilingual education that emphasizes environmental and cultural awareness in order to protect and preserve the land and traditional customs of Honduras.
The Villa Verde School is located less than a mile from Mount Celaque the tallest mountain (and cloudforest) in Honduras. Students from various economic backgrounds receive a quality bilingual education which engages them in experiential activities around ecological themes such as building organic composts, planting trees, cultivating land, and cultural themes including learning local Lencan history and culture, pottery-making and folkloric dance.
