Who: IRC Program of Crawford High School

Where: San Diego , California, United States

Students Plus IRC Program is a voluntary, year-round after-school program designed to support all Crawford High School students improve their academics and develop positive adult/youth partnerships in a safe space during the after school hours.  The program provides academic assistance, informal mentoring, and an array of extracurricular activities such as photography class, garden club, a theater project and field trips to local San Diego attractions.  Perhaps even more importantly, students make meaningful connections with their peers, mentors, and teachers and realize their potential as contributing members of the community.

Crawford High School is located in City Heights, one of the oldest neighborhoods in San Diego.  City Heights is also the most diverse community in the city of San Diego.  Immigrants from Mexico, Somalia, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and more live side by side throughout the community looking to begin a better life for themselves and their families. Presently, the community is plagued with low incomes and tensions based on lack of trust among cultural groups often erupting in community violence.  Most families, however, desire the same things for their children such as access to education, employment, and opportunity.
