Yelapa, Mexico
After one day of travel that involved: car, plane, taxi, foot, and boat... I have arrived in Yelapa, Mexico! This morning I took a water-taxi (small boat) from the pier at Puerto Vallarta to La Playa de Isabel in Yelapa. It was a 45 minute boat ride ... we passed by small rock/jungle islands with natural tunnels carved through them... and miles of the Mexican coast. The first thing I saw when I stepped off at La Playa de Isabel were two horses... I walked passed the horses and up the stone steps as Isabel (the lady in Yelapa I am staying with) had instructed. The stone steps seemed to lead straight into a hillside of jungle. But, soon I saw Isabel walking down the steps from her house. Isabel is originally from Massachusetts, USA but now she spends 8 months of the year living in Yelapa and managing a series of guest houses that she owns. She took me down the path to show me the house I would be staying in for the next week. It is about the size of a classroom...no walls... and a thatched roof! It is really nice! I am sleeping in the loft in a bed surrounded by thin mosquito netting. Until tomorrow, the downstairs is inhabited by a electrician who normally works in Antarctica (to make sure the scientists there have lights when it is dark half the year) but who is currently helping Yelapa with their electrical problems (Yelapa just got electricity two years ago).
It is absolutely beautiful here!! My words could not possibly give it justice! But, I will try... jungle is all around me... thick green vines climb up all the trees... large yellow spiders cling to webs the size of watermelons... butterflies larger than my hand are everywhere... when I look out the window of the loft I see the clear ocean water and part of the mountainside! It is warm but not unbearably hot. There are lots of insects though.
Today I have helped Isabel with some chores... taking down her laundry from the clothes-line and folding it...as well as getting a sculpture made of bones ready for display. I ate lunch with Isabel, the electrician, and a 20-year-old girl named Tegan from British Colombia who is staying with Isabel until the end of January to help with the houses.
This afternoon Isabel is going to show me around town and then tomorrow we meet with a parent and some people from the Yelapa secondary school about One World Youth Project.
On Sunday I am going with 5 other people to an island where the Blue Footed Boobies nest...we are planning on going snorkeling! I can't wait!
Right now I am using Isabel's computer to write this message... I do not know if I will have access to this everyday ...but if not, I will keep a journal and post when I return home!
Sincerely,
Jessica Rimington
