Jan. 16th -- Johannesburg, South Africa

Yesterday we arrived at the Johannesburg airport. Our flight was long... approximately 17 hours long...with a 3-hour lay-over in Amsterdam.

We made the mistake of frequenting the bathroom BEFORE going into the immigration line...mistake. When we exited the bathroom, the line was about 3 times longer... approximately 90 people or more in line!

But, finally we made it through immigration, found our luggage, and went through customs. When we exited customs and walked out into the main area, it was overwhelming. There were crowds of people holding up signs with various names and shouting. We spotted Lisa Thomas, her friend, and father!! It was so nice to see Lisa again! Lisa Thomas is a One World Youth Project Ambassador and also our homestay family while in South Africa.

Lisa was recently accepted into the Bush Academy... a prestigious wildlife guide training academy! Her first day at the academy was today! So, we woke up at 5:05 am to see her off at the Academy. The Bush Academy is about a 3-4 hour drive outside of Johannesburg. We drove with Lisa and her brother Mark. There was beautiful scenery on the drive there!!

The Bush Academy was incredible ... they have a website ...you can search for the link online if you are interested.

We saw ostriches, lizards, impalas (spelling?), and lots of birds!

It was sad to drop Lisa off...because we had not seen her for two years...and only got a chance to catch up for a few hours. But, we are so excited for her at the Bush Academy! What an amazing opportunity!! A great honor to be accepted!

On the drive home we rode with her dad, Roger, her mom, Peta, and her brother, Mark. It was interesting talking to them about South Africa...and the time they had spent living in Florida for two years. Peta is great wealth of knowledge about South Africa history!

We stopped at a street-side market... the goods were beautiful! We also had apple spritzers at a restaurant... great carbonated apple juice!

Tomorrow we go to work with the Honey Badger Club at the Jo'Burg Zoo!

We apologize for the possible lack of creativity, descriptiveness, and lack of adjective variety... jet-lag is real...it does exist...contrary to our earlier beliefs.

Good night!

Sincerely,
Lindsey Tong & Jessica Rimington :)
