Jan. 19th-Jo'burg, South Africa

Hello again from South Africa!

We spent most of today at the apartheid museum. It was extremely impacting. It is difficult to write anything that would give it justice. The majority of the museum was very depressing... often disturbing... but the parts about the 1980s ...when change started, were just incredible. The youth in South Africa were able to make such a huge difference. If it were not for the students taking to the streets in protest, things might not have changed when they did. The violence that the youth sometimes took part in was disturbing... but the core idea that almost the entire youth population of a country was able to rally together to effect a tremendous change, was inspiring. Overwhelmingly inspiring. It made us have to sit down and have a cheese and tomato sandwich and discuss the future of the youth in our country. We will probably write more on this later, but we are just so tired right now.

On a much less important subject, we have taken to really liking cheese and tomato sandwiches! They are so good! Seriously, anyone reading this should get up right now make a grilled cheese sandwich then add some tomato.

Tonight we went to a drumming circle! So much fun! The drum the circle was located in this darkened cement basement in Jo'burg. There were candles lit in a giant menorah-type structure and chairs put in a circle. It was very mysterious looking. They told us to each grab a drum. We did.

The first hour was a lesson. And, the second hour was open to free creative expression. For some reason I (Jessica) had this pre-conceived notion that I would be pretty good at drumming... god knows why! It could not have been further from the truth. We both did well with the basic rhythms, but then they got all fancy on us and started talking in "drum lingo". We had to resort to picking up the maraca and keeping the beat. But, actually ... all and all we did pretty darn good. There was a time when each person had to do a solo, and when it comes to us the man says, "Oh give them a break they are American!" and we were like, "what is that supposed to mean?!" We fancied ourselves as doing quite well.

It was very fun!

Tonight we are going to experiment with our plug converters for the camera equipment and pack and hopefully sleep a good amount of hours. We have a habit of not sleeping nearly as much as we should. Actually, we have a habit of staying up until 3am talking about how to save the world. So, at least we are productive insomniacs.

Sincerely,
Jess
