Who: Colegio Ramiro Priale / Frijoles Magicos Initiative

Where: Lima, Peru

Planting Magic Beans/Frijoles Mágicos is a volunteer-run initiative with the vision that all adolescents will be able to build the future they desire. The initiative, based on a firm belief in the potential of each individual, seeks to strengthen adolescents’ critical thinking skills, self-esteem, sense of personal responsibility, creativity and a passion for life-long learning through activities that empower participants and achieve real, substantial personal change. Frijoles Mágicos has three main lines of action: Branching Upward, mini-projects for personal development; Nourishing the Roots, cultural outings and skill-strengthening workshops; and Planting the Beans, an educational fund that serves as a bridge to higher education.

Branching Upward includes workshops where participants have the chance to develop as individuals and learn about new (and often inaccessible) themes through an interactive, creative approach to learning. Nourishing the Roots is made up of outings to art, dance, theater and other cultural venues around Lima, and of skill-strengthening workshops on issues of interest to participants. Planting the Beans, open to all participants, helps individuals advance toward meeting their future goals by defraying the costs of their education and providing moral support, motivation and tutoring.

Twenty young people between ages 12 and 18 currently participate in Frijoles Mágicos. The group meets 2-3 times per week for workshops.  Current workshops include community gardening and photography and participants recently started their own blog.

Frijoles Mágicos operates out of the Colegio Ramiro Prialé, which is a state-run primary and secondary school. The school is located in San Juan de Miraflores, one of the 43 districts of Lima, Peru’s capital. The district has a commercial center surrounded by many human settlements or shantytowns. The initiative and school serve youth from about 15 of these settlements.
