Where:
Johannesburg, South Africa
The Honey Badger Club is part of the Johannesburg Zoo and focuses on the welfare of the Zoo animals, including behaviour enrichment and animal feeding.
The Club is a group of young kids of all genders and culture, aged from 7 to 14 years of age, who meet at the Johannesburg Zoo once a month to learn about and interact with the chosen animal for the month. An example of a Honey Badger Day would be something like this: We all arrive at the Zoo at 9am, and we are taken to the Education Centre where we are told about our animal for the day e.g. Chimpanzees. We then meet with the keeper of the Chimpanzees who lets us create toys for the chimps. Our favourite toys are pine-cones covered in honey or syrup, and stuffed with fruit and vegetables, and even marshmallows if we are allowed. We then give the Chimpanzees their toys, and watch them play as well as eat them. We like to see whose toy the Chimpanzee likes the most! We then go to the Education Centre where we make some form of craft to take home. In this case we would make something like a monkey chain. Then we have lunch by the seals enclosure, and we go home energized, full of chatty information for our parents, and much excitement for next month!
